Tuesday November 26, 2024

Roselle Hibiscus is a tropical plant also known as rozelle, sorrel, red sorrel, Jamaican sorrel, Indian sorrel, Guinea sorrel, sour-sour, Queensland jelly plant, jelly okra, lemon bush, and Florida cranberry[1]. Hibiscus sabdariffa (hibiscus), also known as roselle or sour tea, is an annual bushy plant in the Malvaceae family. It is widely grown in many African and Southeast Asian countries, where it is typically consumed as a tea beverage or used in traditional medicine[2]. At present, it is widely planted in southern provinces such as Yunnan, Guangxi, and Fujian in China. In 2004, it was included in the list of new food raw materials by the Ministry of Health and the National Health and Family Planning Commission. It is a highly valuable food raw material for development. Currently, researchers have developed foods such as Hibiscus sauce, Hibiscus cola, Hibiscus honey preserves, etc. using Hibiscus as raw material.

Hibiscus is a source of bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, carotenoids, ascorbic acid, and tannins; however, the composition varies depending on the part of the plant used, climatic factors, maturity of the plant, and differences in genotypes[3].
